Summer Term

English

During the summer term in English, we will continue to develop our fiction writing, including using effective dialogue. For our non-fiction writing, we will focus on writing balanced arguments as well as biographies. We will be learning about the features of each genre and using our grammar sessions to apply our knowledge in our writing. We will also complete comprehension work on each genre to ensure we understand what they should look like. Our guided reading texts for the summer term are: The boy at the back of the Class by Onjali Q. Raúf  and Middleworld by J&P Voelkel.

Maths

In Maths, we will be continuing our learning on decimals as well as percentages and how they both link with fractions. We will learn different methods for problem solving with these too. We will also focus on converting measures, as well as volume and capacity. After this, we will be recapping all of our Year 5 learning!  

Science

Our Science unit is all about materials, their properties and how they can change. We will be completing experiments and finding out what they tell us. We will also be looking at animals including humans, learning about the human life cycle and the changes that happen. 

Computing

In computing unit Vector Drawing we will be creating images in a drawing program by using layers and groups of objects. Our other unit of work is Selection in Quizzes which will explore selection in programming to design and code an interactive quiz. 

Geography

Our Geography unit is about settlements and land use. We will be learning about what a settlement is, the different types of settlement and how the land in the UK is used. We will also look at trading and fair trade across the globe.  

History

In History, we will be learning about the Mayan period, this will include their everyday life, facts, timelines, artefacts and finally their downfall.  

Music

Our Music unit is all about rhythm! We will look at Balinese music which involves interlocking rhythms, vocal chants and different structures. We will use different percussion instruments to put together a final performance 

Design and Technology

Our Design and Technology unit is focused on food! We will be learning how to make bread and the different ingredients you can add to make different types of bread. We will also be looking at which types of bread are healthier options.  

Art and Design

In Art, we will be looking at sculpture. We will be using clay to make our own tiles, inspired by Anglo-Saxon patterns and will be developing specific sculpture skills such as carving, coiling and relief. We will be looking at the work of Louise Nevelson for inspiration 

Modern Foreign Languages

This term in Spanish, we will be recapping our knowledge of basic greetings as well as numbers 1-20. We will then learn the vocabulary for different animals so that we can ask and answer the question: Have you got any pets? We will be learning all this vocabulary through speaking and listening, songs and rhymes. 

Physical Education

In P.E. we will continue with our swimming lessons, developing our skills in the water. We will also be developing our tennis skills, perfecting our forehand, backhand and serving skills.  

PSHE

In PSHE, we will be learning about how drugs, that are common to everyday life, can affect our health for example, alcohol and tobacco. We will also look into how to make healthy choices. We will also consider the jobs we would like in the future. We will focus on careers, aspirations, role models and what it will take in order to reach our desired job role.  

Religious Education

Our R.E. unit is Wise words which will explore sacred writings and consider why they are important to their believers. Our other R.E. unit is Values and Beliefs which will investigate the life of a person who has been inspired by their faith and make links between belief and action.
