The school’s intent for Religious Education is to develop pupils' knowledge and understanding of religion, religious beliefs, practices, language and traditions and their influence on individuals, communities, societies and cultures. It enables pupils to consider and respond to a range of important questions related to their own spiritual development, the development of values and attitudes, using reasoned and balanced arguments. Through the teaching of Religious Education, we ensure that children have a strong understanding of, and exposure to diversity and British Values.
Our curriculum promotes pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and prepares all pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of the present and the future. Helping pupils to understand their roles within their school, local and the global community.
In the Autumn Term, EYFS and Y1 pupils think about and discuss caring and belonging, this is revisited in Y2 later in the summer term. In Key Stage 2, pupils explore, investigate and make links between a range of religious traditions.
During the Autumn Term and Spring Term, classes focus on a religious event, festival or celebration (Y1), worship and ceremonies (Y2), Religion in the Home (Y3), Harvest (Y4), Easter (Y5) and Commitment (Y6). As their understanding of the importance of religious events deepen the children will develop their understanding of their own commitment and the commitment of others.
In the Summer Term pupils build on prior knowledge as they explore a range of religious teachings. Pupils are encouraged to think about morals and values of believers. Pupils explore the life of key religious figures, making links as to why they are important to followers. Moving into Key Stage 2, pupils will be able to talk about the importance of worship. In Y6 pupils use prior knowledge to discuss how worship and faith help people make sense of life.
Throughout school the values that are pivotal to religion are evident in our own school values and reflected in our actions, words and attitudes.
