Drawing
In the Autumn term we focused on drawing in our Art lessons. We looked at our Crucial Knoweldge, we spent time looking at differnt artisits and then made our own art based on the skills and knowedge we have learned about.
Reception
This term Reception have been investigating how many differnt lines you can make with a pencil. We looked at 'tone' which is how dark and light a line can be and also discovered that you can make shapes to create pictures.
We made our own pictures and added detail with some of the wiggly and zig zag lines we have been using.
Year 1
Year 1 have loved learning all about the artist George Seurat and how he used stippling to create some fantastic artwork. We loved looking at his pictures and the colours that he used. We worked really hard to practise our skills in creating tone by using hatching and stippling. As part of our unit, we learnt about self-portraits and how to use a mirror to practise drawing our faces. We then tried to use stippling to add some tone to our features such as hair, eyebrows or mouths. Take a look at our fantastic efforts!

Year 2
This term Year 2 have enjoyed recapping the use of line from Year 1 and building on this by learning how to shade and add texture to fruit to make it look real. We studied how fruit looks close up and used pencils to create our work. We looked at the artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo and made our own portrait of fruit.
Year 3
Year 3 have looked at the work of Paul Cezanne and how he drew Still Lifes. Cezanne drew in 3D and looked closely at the perspective of the viewer. To do this we experimented with different techniques used to create light, shade and depth. We built on Year 2 Crucial Knowledge by focusing on use of line and creating a 3D sketch on paper. We compared the work of Cezanne to Arcimboldo and discussed the similarities and differences between the two. We recreated a Still Life in our classroom and moved to sketch the Still Life from different perspectives. We enjoyed using the graded pencils to create shading.
Year 4
Year 4 have learnt all about Vincent Van Gogh this term. We compared his work with Cezanne’s who we learnt about in Year 4 and spent time looking at the similarities and differences. We experimented with pencils of different gradients and used different techniques to add depth and perspective to our drawing. We look at Van Gogh’s work – we were all a fan of his Starry Night painting and some of us used these colours in our final piece. We recreated Van Gogh’s shoes painting using Mrs Curley’s shoes! We’ve all really enjoyed learning more about drawing.
Year 5
In Art this term, Year 5 have been finding out about the work of a local artist Maurice Wade, who was born in Wolstanton. The majority of Wade’s artwork is of places in and around Stoke-on-Trent.
We looked at a range of his artwork, including local pot banks, canals and bridges. We learned that Wade used perspective, a single focal point and horizon in his artwork. We compared the work of Wade to that of Van Gough. We had some super discussions about similarities and differences in Wade and Van Gogh’s pieces.
The children used different pencils with different grades and a range of shading techniques to create their own version of Wade’s Bridges over Canal. The children’s final piece of artwork included a single focus point - this being the area of the drawing the viewer sees first.
Year 6
Year 6 have recently recapped their previous learning on Vincent Van Gogh and his artwork. They researched his life and found out what era he lived in and how this influenced his work. We discussed ‘Road in Etten’ in detail and what skills the children could see within the piece of art. We then linked this to their learning and recreated horizon and perspective skills. The children then created their own artwork using the skills they had learnt. They used a variety of different pencils to create shade and tone which made their artwork stand out and look realistic.
